Update: The Bridge is Open!
Temporary Bridge over Blanco River at Post Road Expected to Open by Mid-December
Hays County Courthouse, San Marcos, TX -- On Thursday, December 3, Hays County oversaw the placement of two 89-foot-long rail cars across the Blanco River on Post Road for use as a temporary bridge that could open for travel as early as mid-December once post-placement work is completed.
The low-profile bridge crossing on the Blanco River at Post Road was destroyed by the Memorial Weekend Flood. Post Road is a heavily trafficked road between San Marcos and Kyle, and Precinct 4 Commissioner Ray Whisenant sought a temporary alternative for the safety and convenience of area residents and travelers. Following work by the Hays County Transportation Department to prepare the footings and pilings, two rail cars (86-feet-long, 40,000 lbs. each) were placed side by side across the river to allow one-direction-at-a-time travel. Signage will instruct vehicles to yield to a car already on the bridge. The temporary bridge is expected to cost about $100,000.
Work on a permanent bridge across the river is expected to begin in the fall of 2016 and be completed in early 2017.
