Hays County Government Center Turns Art Gallery

Public invited to October 16 reception

Hays County Courthouse, San Marcos, TX – The Hays County Government Center’s blank rotunda walls will soon become an art gallery and the public is invited to admire the display of local talent at a reception on October 16.

“A number of residents felt that the blank walls in the Government Center cried out for artwork and formed a committee, with the County Commissioner’s Court approval, to jury artwork by local artists to hang on the walls,” said Hays County Arts Committee Chair Kate Johnson. “We issued a call for artists the new Cultural Arts Program and were overwhelmed by the quality and number of the responses. Initially we will showcase several paintings each by 10 Hays County artists and to celebrate the premier exhibit the Committee is hosting a public reception.”

Artists whose work will be exhibited initially include Veronique Hahn, Michael Penn Smith, Art Arpize, Mikiko Kudo, Tom Bender, Norman Bean, Loyal White, Dan Zinn, Noah Weaver and Ann Everett.

The Arts Committee plans to rotate the exhibit approximately every four months and will issue a new call for artists as necessary,” said committee member Linda Coker, who helped develop the exhibit guidelines and the call for artists. “We’re encouraging all artists who reside in Hays County to consider applying during the next call,” she said. The guidelines are available on the County website at www.co.hays.tx.us, under the Community drop-down tab.

The free inaugural exhibit reception, 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, October 16, will include hors d’oeuvres and an opportunity to chat with artists whose paintings are featured. The public can also view the paintings during regular Government Center hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding official County holidays. The Government Center is located at 712 S. Stagecoach Trail, San Marcos, on the north side of Wonder World Drive near the railroad overpass at I-35.
