Hays County Courthouse, San Marcos, TX – On Tuesday the Hays County Commissioners Court joined governments nationwide in naming Thursday, May 15, as Peace Officers Memorial Day and also proclaimed May 12-16 as Law Enforcement Officers Week in Hays County.
Peace Officers Memorial Day “honors those law enforcement officers who, through their courageous deeds, have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their community or have become disabled in the performance of duty,” according to the proclamation. Law Enforcement Officers Week encourages citizens to “commemorate law enforcement officers, past and present, who, by their faithful and loyal devotion to their responsibilities, have rendered a dedicated service to their communities and in doing so have established for themselves an enviable and enduring reputation for preserving the rights and security of all citizens.”
The Court also invited the public to attend a ceremony Thursday, May 15, at noon at the Hays County Courthouse, 111 E. Following a ceremony in the Commissioners Courtroom on the third floor, taps will be played in the courthouse rotunda in memory of those fallen officers and a 21-gun salute will take place on the Courthouse grounds.
