Hays County Proclaims September 30 as Gary Job Corps Day in Recognition of Student and Staff Volunteerism

Hays County Courthouse, San Marcos, TX – Recognizing the value of volunteering in a community, the Hays County Commissioners Court proclaimed September 30, 2015, as Gary Job Corps Volunteers Day in Hays County and thanked students and staff for their community spirit.

Gary Job Corps students and staff were among the first volunteers to assist in the community during the Memorial Weekend flood and storms. Volunteers included 303 students and 46 staff members who worked 2,865 volunteer hours valued at $49,098.09. Gary Job Corps volunteers also came out to help during the Bastrop fires, floods in 1998 and 2003 and many other natural disasters.

Gary Job Corps Business Community Liaison Randolph Goodman thanked the Court for their recognition of the volunteer work. “It is all about giving, and we want to be a part of that community,” he said.

They’ve also raised money and food donations for the Hays County Food Bank, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), American Heart Association, Tour de Cure for Diabetes, Haitian Relief and more. Most recently 14 students left at 5:30 a.m. on a Saturday to participate in the Cycle for Life Cystic Fibrosis fundraiser in San Antonio.
