First Hays County Veterans Court Set
Hays County Courthouse, San Marcos, TX – Hays County will hold a press conference at 1 p.m. Friday, May 23, in advance of its first Veterans Court docket at the Hays County Government Center in San Marcos. The Veterans Court will convene at 1:30 p.m. in presiding County Court-at-Law #2 Judge Linda A. Rodriguez’s courtroom on the second floor of the Government Center.
In December 2013 the Hays County Commissioners Court unanimously approved the establishment of a court dedicated to assisting veterans. It will be funded by grants made available through the State of Texas and other sources.
Veterans Court will offer a path for resolution of certain criminal charges filed against veterans in Hays County based on an agreement made by the veteran to seek treatment and counseling for military-related disorders that contributed to the criminal charges, according to Judge Rodriguez.
A combination of county offices and veterans’ services will be involved in providing supervision and treatment to participating veterans, including the Hays County District Attorney’s Office, Hays County Community Supervision and Corrections Department, Hays County Courts at Law, Scheib Mental Health Center and the Veterans Administration. Criminal defense attorneys will represent the veteran in court. The Hays County Sheriff’s Office assists by identifying veterans as they are arrested for consideration in the program.
County Judge Bert Cobb, M.D., Veteran Services Officer Jude Prather and Judge Rodriguez are scheduled to speak. The Government Center is located at 712 S. Stagecoach Trail, San Marcos, TX. The press conference will be held in the Center rotunda on the first floor.
