Commissioners Court Proclaims February 22 as President George Washington Day
Hays County Courthouse, San Marcos, TX – The Hays County Commissioners Court has proclaimed February 22, 2018, as President George Washington Day in honor of the first President of the United States. February 22 is President Washington’s actual birthday.
Joe Cox of the William Hightower Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) told the Court that while Presidents such as Abraham Lincoln also deserve recognition during February, the SAR organization focuses on the Revolutionary War and the founding of the United States.
According to the proclamation: George Washington, who lived from 1732 to 1799, mobilized the Continental Army and led the American colonies against the most powerful country in the world, finally defeating the British at the famous battle of Yorktown, Virginia. He was elected as the first President of the United States, serving two terms of office from 1789 to 1797, and through his devotion, wisdom, and vision, became the exemplar of distinguished leadership for all future presidents. This revered founder of our nation resisted the efforts of many supporters to make him a king or dictator, instead using his influence and power to support the creation and adoption of the Constitution of the United States.
The Sons of the American Revolution Hightower Chapter is based in New Braunfels and serves several counties in Central Texas, including Hays. The fraternal organization is made up of members who are descendants of the patriots who served during the Revolutionary War and who helped establish these United State of America. The SAR was joined by the Captain Thomas Moore Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in supporting the recognition of President George Washington Day.
