Hays County Judge Recommends FY 2015 Budget, Commissioners Court Sets Budget Review Dates

Hays County Courthouse, San Marcos, TX – At Tuesday’s (July 29) Commissioners Court meeting, Hays County Judge Bert Cobb, M.D., presented a recommended Fiscal Year 2015 budget of $155,550,812, while maintaining the current tax rate of .4690. The current FY 2014 County budget is approximately $154 million.

The Commissioners Court also scheduled public workshops to discuss proposed expenditures with elected officials and department heads and make suggested changes to the recommended budget. The County’s fiscal year begins October 1, 2014, and by law the Commissioners Court must approve a budget and set the tax rate for the County by September 30.

Among the judge’s budget recommendations are $225,000 for finalizing the implementation of a new Computer Aided Dispatch System, $161,000 for improving information technology in most County offices and $171,000 for capital software to address video magistration requirements and custom reporting and electronic storage options. The recommended budget also includes raises for eligible law enforcement positions under the County’s collective bargaining agreement, a four percent merit pool for all other employees to be distributed at department head discretion and a four percent cost of living adjustment for elected officials. The budget would also add two percent to the current salary chart for new hires to meet demands of an increasingly competitive market.

As part of its regular agenda, the Commissioners Court will hold budget workshops as needed on August 5, 12 and 19. Public hearings on the tax rate and budget will be scheduled for September. All meetings are open to the public and streamed live on the County’s website.

All current FY2014 and FY2015 budget and planning documents are available online by choosing the Financial Transparency icon on the County’s website at www.co.hays.tx.us. A printed copy of the recommended budget is available for review in the County Auditor’s Office at the County Government Center, 712 S. Stagecoach Trail, San Marcos.
