Hays County Commissioners Court Proclaims May 7-13 Correctional Officers and Employees Week
Hays County Courthouse, San Marcos, TX – The Hays County Commissioners Court on Tuesday thanked correctional officers and employees for their hard work and dedication and proclaimed May 7-13 as National Correctional Officers and Employees Week in Hays County.
The proclamation notes that correctional officers are trained law enforcement professionals dedicated to maintaining secure correctional facilities and ensuring public safety. They, along with other correctional employees, teach, train, mentor, counsel and treat thousands of offenders while providing them with direction, hope and a new focus for life outside of corrections.
Hays County Sheriff Gary Cutler, whose office operates the Hays County Jail, told the Court, “I’ll put the Hays County Correctional Officers up against any others in the state or country for the job they do every day. I’ve worked in other jails in my career and these are a fantastic crew of people. They work 12 hour shifts behind closed steel doors with some of the most dangerous people in the country.”
Cutler also noted that four of the 20 law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in 2016 were correctional officers.
Precinct 3 Commissioner Will Conley said that correctional officers tend to be under-valued because they are out of sight and out of mind to the general public. “They have a very tough and necessary job that takes a lot of discipline, and we really appreciate what you do for our county and out state. Thank you for your service.”
