Hays County Commissioners Court Offers Support for BSEACD Desalination Study Grant Application
Feb. 3, 2015
Hays County Courthouse, San Marcos, TX – The Hays County Commissioners Court Tuesday authorized the County Judge to sign a letter supporting the Barton Springs Edwards Aquifer Conservation District’s grant application to fund a feasibility study to desalinate brackish water from the Edwards Aquifer. The letter will be sent to the executive director of the Texas Water Development Board, which will consider whether to fund the request.
The Commissioners Court heard from the BSEACD’s chief hydro geologist, Frank Smith, who told the Court that there are several large reserves of brackish water in parts of the Edwards Aquifer that extend from Bell County through Hays County and into Kinney County. If it were desalinated, the water could be used by people in Hays County. The BSEACD would use the grant money to determine the amount of saline water and the cost effectiveness of a desalination plant, according to Smith.
The Water Development Board grant would provide $275,000 for the study, with BSEACD providing another $260,000 as well as an additional $25,000 of in-kind funding. Precinct 2 Commissioner Mark Jones volunteered to work with the BSEACD on the Court’s behalf if the grant is approved.
