Boaters Urged to Avoid Blanco River at Fischer Store Road Bridge Due to Construction

Hays County Courthouse, San Marcos, TX – Hays County officials are reminding kayakers, tubers, canoers and others using the Blanco River above the Fischer Store Road Bridge to avoid the area and to launch watercraft downriver from the bridge. The Blanco River is blocked at the bridge on the upstream side.

“This area is a construction site and there is much debris in the area as well as construction activity,” Hays County Transportation Director Jerry Borcherding said. “We don’t want folks who are out trying to enjoy the water to find themselves in a dangerous situation or to cause construction delays because of interference.”

Construction of a replacement bridge for the one destroyed by the Memorial Weekend flood has already begun and is expected to be completed in March 2016, at which time the river will be navigable around the bridge again.

“We appreciate everyone’s cooperation during these few months until the Blanco River Bridge is replaced and the Blanco River is navigable again,” Borcherding said. He noted that while contractors have a temporary crossing in place for construction use, it is not open to the public due to safety and legal issues.

Boaters are also reminded to respect private property along the banks.
